A Whodunnit conjured from an empty stage
MARA is a solo storytelling show coming to Linton on Friday 28th February. Internationally-renowned storyteller Dominic Kelly conjures an entire world single-handed from an almost empty stage. He immerses the audience in the vast forests of 19th Century Sweden – and emerging from the trees is a whodunnit with a difference, steeped in Swedish folklore.
Alone on his croft, Morten begins to suffer nightmares and weird visits as he sleeps. A friend tells him he’s plagued by a Mara – someone possessed who unwittingly visits another at night. To free himself, Morten must discover the Mara’s identity. But who is it? Entertaining, unsettling and moving, MARA is a dive into the dreamscape of Swedish folklore, a love story, a playful look at our relationship with sleep and a rummage into what it means to be awake.
“When storytelling”, says Dominic, “you guide the audience through the world of the story, so you have to know it like the back of your hand. Researching this story in the Swedish forests, I got eaten alive by mosquitoes, and had several close encounters with bears.”
Dominic first went to Sweden for 3 days storytelling in 2011, but the Swedish storyteller with whom he was to work was taken ill. Dominic got along so well with his last-minute replacement that they got married a year later! A decade on, he does indeed know her home turf in northern Sweden like the back of his hand, and he takes you on an unforgettable journey into this place, through experiences we can all relate to.
Dominic Kelly’s warm, witty and powerful storytelling style has captivated audiences from India to the Arctic Circle. His UK venues include the Barbican, National Theatre and British Museum. MARA has been created with funding from Arts Council England.
